Shingle roofing

Shingle Roofing Built for Arizona Sun

Shingles are a smart, affordable roof for a lot of Valley homes — as long as they're the right product, nailed correctly, and sitting on a roof that can breathe. Get those three right and a shingle roof serves you well here. Get ventilation wrong and it ages years early.

Ace Roofing crew installing architectural asphalt shingles on a Phoenix home

What the sun does to a shingle roof here

An asphalt shingle is a mat saturated with asphalt and surfaced with mineral granules. The granules take the UV hit so the asphalt doesn't. In Phoenix, that's a full-time job — our roofs get more intense sun for more of the year than almost anywhere else in the country.

Over time the granules wash and blow off, the asphalt beneath dries out and loses flexibility, and the shingle starts to curl, crack at the edges and lose its seal to the course below. Once that seal breaks, monsoon wind gets under the tab and lifts it, and then you're not dealing with aging — you're dealing with a hole.

Heat from below matters just as much. A poorly ventilated attic turns into an oven that cooks the shingles from the underside and drives your cooling costs up at the same time. Two identical roofs on the same street can differ by years of service life on ventilation alone.

Our shingle work

  • Shingle repair — wind-lifted, torn, cracked and missing shingles
  • Full tear-off and shingle re-roofs with architectural asphalt shingles
  • Attic and roof ventilation assessed and corrected as part of the job
  • New underlayment, drip edge, valley metal and starter and ridge courses
  • Flashing and penetration detailing at walls, vents, skylights and coolers
  • Decking repair uncovered at tear-off, shown and priced before we continue

How we install a shingle roof

01Assess the roof and the attic

Pitch, existing layers, decking condition and — critically — how well the attic is currently ventilated. That informs the proposal, not just the shingle color.

02Protect and tear off

Landscaping, walls and AC equipment covered, then the old roof comes off down to the deck so nothing is buried under the new one.

03Deck and ventilation work

Soft or delaminated sheathing replaced, and intake and exhaust ventilation corrected so the new roof isn't being baked from below.

04Underlayment, metal, then shingles

Underlayment, drip edge, valley metal and starter course first — then shingles nailed to manufacturer specification. Nail placement and count is where cheap installs fail.

05Cleanup and walkthrough

Full cleanup with a magnet sweep for nails, then a walkthrough of what we did and what we found underneath.

Choosing shingles for a Valley home

Architectural (dimensional) shingles are what we recommend over old three-tab for homes here. They're heavier, they hold up better to wind uplift, and they carry stronger manufacturer ratings — which matters when a monsoon gust front rolls through Peoria at 50 mph.

Lighter colors reflect more heat, which helps the attic and the shingles themselves, though color choice is usually driven by your HOA and how the house looks. We'll give you the practical trade-offs and let you decide.

One more Arizona note: get the roof sorted before solar goes on. Panels over an aging shingle field means paying to remove and reinstall them when the roof needs replacing a few years later.

Common Questions

How long do shingles last in Arizona?
Less than the number on the wrapper, honestly. Manufacturer ratings assume a milder climate; our UV and 115-degree deck temperatures age asphalt faster. Ventilation and installation quality make a bigger difference to real-world life here than the warranty length does.
Are shingles a bad choice for Phoenix?
No — they're a sound, cost-effective choice, and plenty of Valley neighborhoods are built with them. They just need the right product and proper ventilation. Where tile makes more sense for your home, we'll say so.
Can I switch from shingle to tile, or tile to shingle?
Sometimes. Tile is considerably heavier, so going from shingle to tile depends on your roof structure being able to carry it — that has to be assessed, not assumed. Tile to shingle is usually simpler. We'll walk you through what your home can support.
What does granule loss mean?
Those granules are the shingle's sunscreen. When you see them in your gutters or bare black patches on the roof, the asphalt underneath is exposed and aging quickly from there. It's one of the clearer signs a shingle roof is heading toward replacement.
